Students in the district’s elementary, middle and high schools are working with their teachers to submit essays and pictures to be considered for Bailey’s Book: A Community Celebrates Its Assets, an initiative of the Fairport-Perinton Healthy Communities-Healthy Youth Developmental Assets® Initiative. Each submission must incorporate at least one of the 40 developmental assets (http://www.search-institute.org/assets/forty.htm) identified by the Assets Initiative. Bailey was an active participant in the initiative while a Fairport student. District educators say their students are enthusiastic about the project. “The students are excited about the possibility of becoming published authors and without doubt, they want to honor Bailey Goodman’s memory,” says Heather Jones, a Fairport High School English teacher. “I think it’s an awesome idea to keep Bailey’s memory alive in such a positive way,” says Kristen Growney, a high school senior. “Bailey was an enthusiastic promoter of the assets program so publishing the community’s thoughts of those assets in her honor is something she would have loved.” Community members are also invited and encouraged to submit essays, drawings or photos online. Guidelines for online and mailed submissions, and the online submission form, are available at www.fairport.org/baileysbook. A volunteer committee of qualified individuals will review and select submissions for the book to be published in Spring 2010. Other submissions will be published on the project Web site. The idea for Bailey’s Book came from a committee comprised of Bailey’s friends and family. The group of students and adults has met continuously since Spring 2008 to develop the concept in a way that would involve students and the community in a meaningful way while honoring Bailey Goodman’s memory. The project, Bailey’s Book: A Community Celebrates Its Assets, is a compilation of essays and pictures to be submitted by Fairport students and community members later this fall. Each essay and picture will incorporate at least one of the 40 developmental assets (http://www.search-institute.org/assets/forty.htm) identified by the community's asset building initiative. The project will be funded by donations made in Bailey’s memory to the initiative. Bailey participated in the community asset initiative while a student in Fairport middle and high schools. “This is a wonderful way to remember Bailey’s passion for asset building,” says Debra Tandoi, FCSD asset coordinator. She notes that the project, which is designed to engage the community in a meaningful way while representing her former student’s personalities and values, also dovetails with the district’s curriculum. “Bailey’s Book incorporates the district’s commitment to literacy and supporting a caring school community,” she adds. “We wanted the donations in Bailey’s name to benefit a wide range of people,” explains Sharon Goodman, Bailey’s mother. “We are extremely excited about the support the Fairport district is giving this project and can’t wait to begin reading the submissions.” The brainchild of a committee comprised of Bailey’s friends and family, Bailey’s Book will be introduced to all grade levels around the district later this fall. Community members of all ages are also invited to submit essays by mail or through the project Web site, www.fairport.org/baileysbook. A volunteer committee of qualified individuals will review and select submissions for the book to be published in spring 2010. Other submissions will be published on the project Web site.
