WE@RIT hosts “Park & Ride:  Creative Robotic Design”

January 30th & 31st, 2010

Women in Engineering at RIT (WE@RIT) introduces physics and engineering concepts in a fun way building a roller coaster and utilizing Lego® Mindstorm NXT Kits, while placing emphasis on basic teamwork, creativity and design.  The program is being conducted in the James E. Gleason Building, Xerox Auditorium at RIT’s Kate Gleason College of Engineering.

This workshop is ideal if you like to know how to make things work, roll, buzz, or even think!  Don’t be afraid if you haven’t worked with Lego® Mindstorm NXT before, as participants will be paired with two other campers and a Team Leader - an RIT engineering student, developing a strong mentoring relationship.  Teams work together to design and build creative devices to meet a set of engineering requirements.  All will be challenged by the utilization of sensors and programming topics as they guide their robot through an “amusement park” setting.

You will be officially registered in the program as soon as you fill out the registration forms (available on our website) and send in payment in full. Forms and payment due by Tuesday, January 26th (first come-first serve).  We will send you an email to confirm participation in the program.

What is Kids on Campus?
Cool Projects! Awesome Technology! Two weeks of exciting workshops for middle and HS students. Kids on Campus is all about cutting-edge topics involving computers, science, math, art, and technology. It’s a chance to work in small teams, unleash creativity, and develop critical thinking skills.

Who belongs at Kids on Campus?
Kids on Campus is for students who love technology — workshops are specifically designed to capture the interest and imagination of students with high academic potential. Students actively participate in a rigorous, hands-on learning experience, and must be able to work well in a group setting. There should be no behavioral concerns that might negatively impact the group dynamic.

How does it work?
Kids on Campus offers two repeating sessions during the month of July. Each session is two weeks long and runs from 9 AM to 3 PM, daily, Monday through Friday. Students choose one area to focus on for the two-week session. Workshops are small group, hands-on, project-oriented, and lots of fun.

We have designed our workshops to offer flexibility for students. Workshops have been developed for beginner through advanced learners and are offered at three grade levels: 5-6, 7-9 and 9-12. Please note: grade level is determined by what grade your child will enter in the fall.

An extended day option is available from 3 PM to 5 PM. Activities include outdoor games, indoor strategy games and computer activities.

Students may enroll in more than one session. Read the workshop descriptions on the following pages and follow the registration instructions.

Once you have registered, please go to Forms, complete and return the Welcome Packet.
