Fairport Teachers Shave Heads for Cancer
RACHEL SWEENEY

Students will now be able to begin donating money towards the Teens Living with Cancer Competition, sponsored by the Leo Club. Mr. Salinas, Mr. Kaukeinen, and Mr. Northrup are the three contestants. Whoever has the most of money donated in their jars by June 4th, will have their head shaved. Jars will be located in the staff member’s classrooms or office and by the auditorium during lunch periods. If Mr. Northrup wins, he will also have his beard shaven off. There will be a short assembly on June 4th to announce the ‘winner’ and to perform the haircut.

This organization was chosen by the Leo Club for the contest because of the recent effect cancer has had on our local community. Approximately, 12,000 young people between the ages of 13 and 24 are diagnosed with cancer each year in the US, but survival rates have shown little improvement since 1975, as compared with other age groups. Teens often fall right in the middle of a health care void. They fit somewhere between a juvenile pediatric hospital and the quiet and harsh reality of an adult clinic. Something needs to be done about this problem and this is our school’s chance to help. So get out there and start donating!
