Avoid Prom Date Pressure
KAYLA DAVIS

Although prom is still around two months away, the pressure seems to have set in early. The Junior Prom this is year is being held at Locust Hill, on May 15th. The process of who to ask, how to get there and how you’re going to afford your dress, tux, and ticket can be extremely overwhelming. Because I have already gone through this experience, there are many pointers I feel should be put out there, trust me!

Prom is supposed to be a memorable experience; it’s a cliché of “the best night of your life” to many individuals. So, who are you going to share this sacred high school memory with? Thinking about it this way can definitely pressure your mind a little too much. Don’t give into the pressure, it’s not worth it! I’m sure you want this evening to be stress free right? So go with someone you’re going to have fun with. If your dream date doesn’t end up asking you, go with your best friend. Chances are, you will be more comfortable around him, and have a much better time. Would you rather spend your night being self conscious and nervous or laughing and having a genuinely good time?

Another issue is your finances; the cost of your dress/tux and your prom ticket can be stressful. This was the most overwhelming part of prom for me. Having to go store to store to find just the right dress that fit me and my personality was nerve wracking, especially considering the prices! My date and I had to decide on a color we wanted to wear, together. He wanted to wear a white tuxedo, very different. So having to compromise was difficult. Finally I found a black and white patterned dress, at an affordable price. There are numerous prom dress stores at East view mall; my personal favorite is Cache. Getting your dress early is a smart idea, so your date can order his tuxedo ahead of time. Prom tickets are another issue. At Fairport High School, the price for a prom ticket last year was fifty dollars. A little expensive, but who pays for it? For me, my date paid for the prom ticket, since HE asked ME. Just talk about the cost of tickets with your date, so you’re both always on the same page.

And last, how are you going to get there?! Limousine, party bus, car, or parents? There are many options. Obviously the most affordable way of transportation is to be dropped off. On the other hand, my group of friends organized a limousine for all of us to ride in on prom night. It was so much fun and an unforgettable experience, but it was also a lot of money. It cost seventy five dollars per person, with twenty people in the limo. Searching limousine companies early is definitely another intelligent idea, instead of waiting for the last minute!

All of these issues can be nerve wracking and definitely ruin your prom experience, so don’t let them! Be calm, get it done early, and just have fun with your friends. Don’t let the nerves get to you; it’s not worth it in the end.
